With the season premiere of Mad Men is airing this Sunday, Lei Chiccontacted CLOTH in search of the perfect ‘Betty Draper’ apron for their readers in hopes of inspiring the inner domestic goddess in every modern gal. So, CLOTH rolled up it’s baking sleeves and had good ole fashioned fun creating this How-To exclusively for Lei Chic, Hawaii’s daily source for all things stylish in the isles.
Betty Draper Apron How-To
Materials Needed: 1 yard of fabric, 1 ¼ yard of trim, Scissors, Ruler, Iron, ‘Spaghetti strap’ tool, Pocket Pattern
STEP 1, Pattern Pieces
STEP 1, Cutting the Pattern
To build the apron base you will begin by marking the following measurements: 16”w waistline. 20”w hemline. 15” l. Be sure to round the bottom edges to your desired preference prior to cutting.
Print out the attached pocket pattern to use as a template, cut four; you will need two per pocket.
Measure and cut the waistband, 3″w x 60″l

(1) For each pocket begin by pinning and sewing two pieces with the right side of the fabric together, start stitching where the arrow is on the template and end at the star leaving a small gap so you may turn it right side out.
(2 & 3) Inserting your spaghetti strap tool through the gap and grabbing the opposite side, pull the pocket right side out, iron it flat, and sew the gap closed.
(4) Make a knot with the two ends.

To assemble the waistband, fold in half lengthwise and sew both ends closed leaving a 20” opening in the middle. Using your spaghetti strap tool, hook and pull each end out and iron flat. Insert the apron body into the waistband opening and sew closed.
Lastly, pin the pockets in the desired location and sew in place.
